National Parks Association of NSW (NPA NSW) is a non-profit community organisation which seeks to protect and conserve the complete range and diversity of species, natural habitats, features and landscapes of New South Wales. The Southern Sydney Branch of NPA covers a membership distribution over the Southern Sydney suburbs. The branch has its origins from the NPA Sutherland Sub Branch established in 1972. Fourteen years later, on the 6th of August 1986, a meeting was held to elect office bearers and establish a full branch of the NPA to be known as the Southern Sydney Branch. Twenty-seven members attended the meeting at Gymea Community Centre. A number of the original office bearers elected at that meeting continue to hold positions in the branch. The discussions at that first meeting centred on issues threatening the Hacking River and Royal National Park, especially the proposed Helensburg urban development. Today the branch continues to engage in campaigns for the protection of these and other natural areas in Southern Sydney. In addition to its conservation campaigns, the branch is also engaged in other NPA activities such as bushwalking, biodiversity surveys, etc. Business meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month and are open to all members who wish to have their say and contribute to the discussions. Members meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month where slideshow presentations are held. These are informal, informative and relaxing with supper provided.
